Resumen (ES)
The association of tibia fracture and vascular injury
is notfrequent, however it is a severe lesión that could end up
in amputation. The present study aims to retrospectively
analyze these cases to establish cooperation between trauma
and vascular surgeons. Between February 1996 and October
2001 fifteen cases were treated for vascular injury of the
popliteal artery. Eleven cases were caused by a non-penetrating
trauma (64,7%), seven of which were traffic accidents
(41,1%). The rest (6 cases) were caused by a penetrating
trauma (35,2%), and traffic accident was again the cause ¡n
most of them. The mean MESS (Mangled Extremity Severity
Score) score was 5,4 + 1,6 (range 3 to 9) points. Fifteen patients
had a MESS score of less than 8 points and 2 cases had
a score of more than 7 points. Currenttechniques of vascular
reconstruction allow preserving the limb in many cases, however,
¡njury to the popliteal artery is still a serious lesión and
almost half of the cases suffer a posttraumatic incapacity. Peripheral
nerve and skeletal lesions are more frequently associated
with ¡ncapacity, together with the arterial lesión.
