Experimental Study of the Perichondrial proliferative capacity using free perichondrialgrafts in the inmature rabbit.A full thickness chondral defect was surgically created in the· rabbit's ear. The perichondrialgraft was sutured bigding the gap, and new chondrocytes were seen after 3-6-12 weeks.The perichondrial origin of the new chondrocytes was proven using Feulgen stain incombination with the cytophometric method.We therefore suggest that the graft undergoes revascularization, then the fibroblastsproliferate, forming several Iayers of chondrocytes, which, in their turn, go on increasingthe cartilage thickness by intersticial growth.
