Resumen (ES)
The total knee arthroplasty still brings problems in its final results. There are many prothesis models for improving the results which require the leastbone resection possible. In conclusión, there are two types of prothesis: the hingeprothesis and the sliding prothesis. The authors compare them, .after a six monthfollow-up, finding the comparative results between 15 cases operated with the hingeprothesis (Shier's model) and other 15 cases operating with the sliding prothesis(Coventry's model). The conclusions are that the sliding prothesis requires a longersurgical time. Concerning the pain, the results are very similar in both types. The hingetype gives a higher number and more severe complications; however, the surgeon shouldhave both types available in order tochose the most suitable in each case, accordingly tothe patient's age, the pathological disorder of the knee and the patient's cooperation. An historical review of the arthroplasty of the knee, the description of the most usualprothesis and the frequent complications are collected following the general experienceand that of the autors.
