The role of Hoffa fat pad in osteoarthritic knees and
total knee arthroplasty surgery has had limited attention. The
purpose of this study was the histological evaluation of neural
elements in 22 specimens of Hoffa fat pad got during the
surgery for 22 consecutive total knee arthroplasty in osteoarthritic
knees. The results show that all the specimens had
free nerve endings. The free nerve endings have been related
with propioception. According with these results we can think
that the conservation of at least a part of this fat pad would
allow a better function and preservation of the implant.
