Resumen (ES)

A pin, 0''''9 mm. in diameter and 15 mm. long, was inserted in the right tibia of 56 one month-old-male rats crossing the proximal growth plate. The animals were sacrificed at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after operation. A histochemical, Alelan Blue staining, and microvascular study was carried out in the proximal growth plates of both tibias. In most animals no Alcian B1ue staining was observed on the growth plate around the pin from the beginning, but the remaining growth cartilage was normal as compared to the contralateral one. At the 2nd week vascular supply increased around the pin both in the epiphysis and the metaphysis but no vessels were observed to cross the growth plate. After the 8th week a few vessels crossed the physis where the pin was inserted but not in the remaining plate. These findings suggest that pins inserted across groth pIates induce bone formation in them.
