Resumen (ES)

The authors
carry out an experimental study to evaluate the real possibilities of meniscal fibrocartilage to repair osteochondral defects
in the weight -bearing are a of the medial condile of the rabbit knee , employing xenografts and cryopreservated t reated xenografts from dogs. 76 animals were studied
b y histological means for periods of one week and 18 months , comparing the results obtained with others series.
The meniscal
fibrocartilage xenografts (44 animals ) , whe n they are not rejected , appeared
capable of restoring a functional articular
surface , no modifyi ng its entire histological
structure and celularity throughout the experiment , obtaining a perfect union
with the underlying bone tissue, just like the obtained with meniscal autografts
and allografts. The neigh bouring articular surface was conserv e d. The rejection index was about 18 %.
The meniscal
treated xenografts, have been cryopreservated apply ingtechniques used in the articular
cartilage preservation. Thirty - two animals were been studied in this serie .
With this method, the xenografts lost thei r whole celularity, showed a highr ejection
index and didn´t obtain a true union with the bone tissue .
However, i
t looks like to behave as an inducer of a good reparation of localized articular
osteochondral defects.
